Annotation for Delicious Account

My delicious account has images and videos that reflect the grander of Greek Theatre in the ancient world.  It covers a range of topics spanning from how Greek theatre began to the importance of the theatre to the society.  The pictures all are meant to capture the enormous size of these arenas.  The Greeks wouldn’t spend all that time, money and labor unless the event was important.  That was the main idea that I was trying to get across when I was looking for things to add to my Delicious account.

Citation For Two Websites and Two Blogs

1) Ancient Greek Theatre (March 27, 2007).  More about religion and theatre.  Message posted to blogspot, archived at http://greektheatre.blogspot.com

2) Dienekes (February 17, 2007).  Ancient Greek Theatre Discovered.  Message posted to blogspot, archived at http://dienekes.blogspot.com/2007/02/ancient-greek-theatre-discovered.html

1) Walter Englert (6/9/08).  Ancient Greek Theatre.  Hum110 Tech.  http://academic.reed.edu/humanities/110tech/theatre.html

2) Scott R. Robinson.  Theatre and Drama in Ancient Greece.  (retrieved 6/9/08).  http://www.cwu.edu/~robinson/ppages/resources/theatre_history/theahis_2.html

The first blog talks about theatre as a form of entertainment and not just a religious ceremony.  He explains that drama directors and authors led privileged lives.  The second blog informs readers about the discovery of an ancient theatrical arena that was important to the celebration of the Goddess Dionysus.  It talks about the importance of these arenas.  The websites on the other hand have a broader choice of topics that gives you information about the culture and theatre.  The websites would be useful I think because they have more information.  It is easier to write a paper when you have more information in front of you.  I also think that the websites are more reliable in terms of credibility.  I would have to think twice before I used the information on the blogs because I wouldn’t be sure about their credibility.  On the other hand, I think that the blogs would be useful because the touch on topics that I otherwise wouldn’t have thought of.

Citation For 3 Scholarly Journals

1)  Robin Waterfield (2007).  The Origins of Theatre in Ancient Greece and Beyond:  From Ritual to Drama.  Edited By Eric Csapo and Margaret C. Miller.  The Heythrop Journal 48 (5), 791-792.

-I chose this article because it summary of information about a book on the origins of theatre.  If I were to write a paper I think it would be important for me to get information as quickly as possible and this article would help with that.  It relates to my topic because it talks about how theatre was inspired by Greek culture; therefore, linking the two.  It is an opinion piece because it reviews a book.

2)  Waters, Irene.  Ancient Greek Tales For Today.  Contemporary Review;  June 2001, Vol.278 Issue 1625, p.356

-This article explains not only the origins but also the functions of drama.  She tries to explain the mass appeal of theatre back then and why people still go and see it today.  She stresses the fact that in ancient Greece theatre was mainly used for entertainment, though it was also used religiously and politically.  She wrote this article after her experience at a live performance of the Trojan war so it is filled with her opinions.  She does back up her conclusions with facts though.

3)  Wilmer, Steve.  Women In Greek Tragedy Today:  A Reappraisal.  Theatre Research International; July 2007, Volume 12 Issue 2, P. 106-118.

-Steve comments about a certain aspect of Greek culture that could be seen through theatre.  I think it would be helpful for a paper because it would bring in another topic that I could gather information for and write about.  He writes about women in this society.  Greek plays were written by men and acted out by men in every role.  I Think this explains the role that women played or didn’t play religiously in this culture.

Summary and Description of my Topic

I chose fine arts because it was a broad topic that could be narrowed down in a multitude of different directions.  I narrowed it down to theatre and culture.  I Then related that to Greek Culture.  If I had to write a paper it would be on the significance of Greek Theatre.  This topic directly relates to my cluster which is Ancient World.  I believe that Greek Theatre was directly influenced by greek culture and society.  Theatre explained religious, social and political values of the time.
